About 84,000 Lights & Sounds Fire Truck Activity Board toys are being pulled from shelves after Melissa & Doug determined that a small hose-shaped port on the toy can come loose and detach, creating a choking hazard for young children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on September 17, 2026, listing it as a Fast Track Recall.

The toy in question, marketed as the ‘Lights and Sound Fire Truck,’ is a red plastic fire engine with spinning wheels, a rotating white ladder and a busy-board panel that lights up and makes sounds. It also includes a black plastic connector shaped like a fire hose — the very piece that has been found to break loose.

The recalled item is the ‘Lights & Sounds Fire Truck Activity Board,’ measuring about 10.5 inches high by 14.31 inches wide by 3.06 inches deep and weighing roughly 1.6 pounds. ‘Melissa & Doug’ is embossed on the battery compartment on the bottom of the toy, along with two rotating date wheels showing the month and year of manufacture.

What Went Wrong?

According to CPSC, the fire hose-style port built into the toy can come loose and detach from the main body. Once separated, the small piece is sized in a way that poses a serious risk of choking if a young child puts it in their mouth. Melissa & Doug has received 26 reports of the port coming loose, including one report describing a minor cut. No further injuries have been reported to date.

Where Were These Products Sold?

The fire truck activity boards were sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com between July 2025 and August 2026, for about $30 each. The toys were imported by Melissa & Doug, based in Wilton, Connecticut, and manufactured in China.

If you have one of these toys at home, stop letting your child play with it right away. Consumers are asked to remove the batteries first, then register the product at www.melissaanddoug.com/recall to begin the return process.

As part of the registration, consumers will be given a unique code to write in permanent marker on the front of the toy alongside the word ‘RECALL,’ and they will be asked to cut off the black plastic hose piece before photographing the destroyed toy and uploading that image during registration. Once the registration is confirmed, the toy can be thrown away in regular household trash.
