The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on September 3, 2026, warning that the oversized water beads pose choking and intestinal obstruction risks if swallowed by a child.

What Products Are Being Recalled?

The recall covers the Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun Toys, Model D08004. The toys are translucent pink, filled with glitter and water beads, and feature a cartoon face pressed into the squishy exterior. Each toy is packaged inside a tan plastic container designed to resemble a bamboo steamer basket. The removable packaging is labeled ‘Rainbow MYSTERY’ and ‘SUGAR EDITION’ on the front. Aside from the printed cartoon face, the toy itself carries no other markings.

The toys were imported by OKK Trading and manufactured in China. They were sold at various third-party stores nationwide from May 2026 through August 2026.

Why Was This Recall Issued?

According to the CPSC, the squishy bun toys fail to meet the mandatory safety standard for toys because the water beads inside them expand to a size larger than what federal regulations permit. That expansion is what makes the beads especially dangerous: if a child swallows one, it can continue to grow inside the body after ingestion.

Once swallowed, a water bead can cause severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, choking, and intestinal obstruction. In the most serious cases, this type of internal blockage can be fatal. The CPSC has flagged the hazard as a risk of death, not just injury, underscoring how seriously the agency is treating oversized water bead products marketed to children.

No incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with this specific product so far, but the mandatory standard violation was serious enough to prompt an immediate nationwide recall.
