31,000 Hero Fire Spray Canisters Recalled Over Fire and Burn Risks

A fire extinguisher that is supposed to save lives in an emergency can instead become the source of one, according to a new recall from Prepared Hero. The company has recalled about 31,000 Hero Fire Spray Canisters after finding that the units can deteriorate over time, causing them to rupture or fail to operate when consumers actually need them during a fire. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on September 10, 2026, warning that the defect poses a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards.

The firm has already received nine reports of canisters exploding or deteriorating while simply sitting in storage. No injuries have been reported so far, but CPSC and Prepared Hero are urging consumers not to wait for something to go wrong before acting.

What Products Are Being Recalled?

The recall covers Hero Fire Spray Fire Canisters, sold in either a red-and-blue or all-red design featuring the company’s logo and the name ‘HERO Fire Spray’ printed on the front panel. Each canister holds 20 fluid ounces, measures about 2.6 inches in diameter and 11.4 inches tall, and weighs roughly 1.8 pounds. A black plastic release tab sits on top of the unit.

Only one batch is affected. Consumers should check the base of their canister for the date code ’09/2024′, which is stamped clearly on the bottom of the unit. Canisters without this date code are not part of the recall.

Why Was This Recall Issued?

According to CPSC, the recalled canisters can break down over time, which may cause them to rupture unexpectedly or simply fail to discharge when triggered during an actual fire. Either scenario defeats the entire purpose of the device and leaves users exposed to flames or burns at the exact moment they are counting on protection. The recall has been classified by CPSC as a Fast Track Recall, a process reserved for companies that quickly agree to a corrective action after being notified of a hazard.

Where Were These Canisters Sold?

The Hero Fire Spray Canisters were sold online at PreparedHero.com and Amazon.com from October 2024 through January 2026, at prices ranging from $18 to $30. Prepared Hero, based in Sheridan, Wyoming, imported the product, which was manufactured in China.

What Should You Do?

Anyone who owns one of the affected canisters should stop using it immediately. Because the product is pressurized, it cannot simply be tossed in the trash or dropped into a curbside recycling bin.

Consumers are encouraged to check their fire safety equipment now, rather than during an emergency when it may be too late to discover a problem.
