The Reason Behind the Recall
According to the CPSC, the lithium-ion battery and electrical components in the recalled hand warmers can overheat. An overheating battery can ignite, and that can cause serious burns or start a fire. Lithium-ion batteries that fail can burn intensely and are harder to control than ordinary household fires, which is why regulators treat these defects seriously even when no injuries have been reported.
The agency lists the hazard as a risk of serious injury from fire and burn hazards. Because the product is a handheld item that is often kept in pockets, gloves or bags, an ignition could happen close to the body.
Who Is Affected?
Anyone who bought Gobi Heat rechargeable hand warmers through the company’s website during the sales window is affected. The company sold the product only online. The recalled units were manufactured in China.
The firm responsible for the product is Dragon Gear Inc., doing business as Gobi Heat, of Severance, Colorado. About 47 units were also sold in Canada, which is why Health Canada issued a matching notice.
What Consumers Need to Do Now
If you own these hand warmers, stop using them immediately. Check the underside of each unit for model number UT3053. Then follow these steps:
- Go to gobiheat.com/pages/handwarmer-recall to get a claim number and instructions.
- Write the word Recalled on the product in permanent marker.
- Take a photo showing the marked hand warmer and the model number, and email it to recall@gobiheat.com.
- Choose either a full refund or store credit. The store credit equals the full purchase price plus 20% of that amount.
- Dispose of the recalled product, including its lithium-ion battery, in line with local and state hazardous waste rules.
Do not put the recalled hand warmers in the trash. Do not place them in curbside recycling bins or in the used-battery recycling boxes found at many retail and home improvement stores. The CPSC explains that recalled lithium-ion batteries carry a greater fire risk than other batteries and must be handled differently.
Your local household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center may accept the recalled product. Call the center ahead of time and ask whether it takes recalled lithium-ion batteries. If it does not, contact your municipality for further guidance.
Regulatory Response
The CPSC posted the recall as a voluntary action carried out in consultation with the agency. Federal law prohibits selling products that are subject to a voluntary recall undertaken with the CPSC. The agency’s notice states that consumers should stop using the hand warmers right away and contact the company for a remedy.
Consumers can reach Gobi Heat at 888-462-4743 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. The company can also be reached by email at recall@gobiheat.com or online at gobiheat.com, where a RECALL INFORMATION link appears at the top of the page.
Anyone who has experienced a problem with this or any other product can report it to the CPSC through SaferProducts.gov or by calling the agency’s hotline at 800-638-2772.
