What Triggered the Recall

The high chairs violate the mandatory safety standard for high chairs. They do not have a passive restraint system. A passive restraint is a built-in feature that helps keep a child from sliding down and out of the seat without a caregiver having to buckle anything.

Without it, a child can slip through the opening between the feeding tray and the seat. The child can then become entrapped or fall. CPSC describes the resulting risk as serious injury or death.

No incidents or injuries have been reported so far.

Who Should Be Concerned

Anyone who bought a Costway convertible high chair between May 2023 and July 2026 should check their product. This includes parents, grandparents, daycare providers and anyone who bought one as a gift.

The high chairs were sold at Walmart and Target stores nationwide, and online at Costway.com. The recalling firm is Goplus Corporation, doing business as Costway, of Fontana, California.

The recall also matters to anyone who plans to resell or give away a used Costway high chair. Federal law prohibits selling products subject to a CPSC recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the agency. Do not pass one along to another family.

Regulatory Response

CPSC posted the recall notice on its website and lists the remedy as a replacement. The agency says consumers should stop using the recalled high chairs immediately and contact Costway for a free replacement.

CPSC also encourages consumers to report dangerous products or product-related injuries at SaferProducts.gov. You can reach the agency’s hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 800-638-8270).

Why This Matters for Families

High chairs are used daily, often with an infant or toddler eating in them while a caregiver is busy nearby. A gap that a child can slide through is a hazard even when an adult is in the room. A child who slips through can become trapped or can fall, and the CPSC warns that the consequences can be severe.

If your child has been in one of these high chairs, the safest move is to switch to another safe seating option while you wait for the replacement to arrive. Make sure any substitute is in good condition and used according to its instructions.

Keep your receipt or take a clear photo of the product now. Costway will ask for one of the two when you start the replacement process, so having it ready should speed things up.
