Fresh Bites, Spyhill, Fresh & Local Sandwiches Recalled: Listeria Risk

A Listeria monocytogenes contamination risk has triggered the recall of nearly thirty sandwich, sub and croissant products sold under the Fresh Bites, Spyhill and Fresh & Local brands in Alberta. Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall on September 17, 2026, warning consumers not to eat, sell, serve or distribute any of the affected items.

The recall covers dozens of individual product lines, ranging from turkey and bacon subs to ham and Swiss croissants, all traced back to recalling firm Fresh Bites Inc. The CFIA has classified the action as a Class 1 recall, its most serious designation, reserved for situations where there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product will cause serious health consequences or death.

Products Affected by This Recall

The recall spans a wide range of pre-made sandwiches, subs, croissants and naan wraps sold under three brand names: ‘Fresh Bites’, ‘Spyhill’ and ‘Fresh & Local’. Some products were also sold without a listed brand name. Affected items include the ‘Turkey & Bacon Sub’, ‘Ham & Cheddar Sandwich’, ‘Turkey & Monterey Jack Sandwich’, ‘Turkey Club Croissant’, ‘Ham & Turkey Croissant Pack’, ‘Ham & Swiss Croissant’, ‘Cold Cut & Mozzarella Sub’, ‘Hungryman Sub’, ‘Assorted Cold Cut Sub’, ‘Italian Sub’, ‘Ultimate Sub’, ‘Half Ultimate Sub’, ‘Brie, Fig & Turkey Naan’, ‘Ham & Monterey Jack Sandwich’, ‘Smoked Turkey Sandwich’, ‘Ham & Swiss Sandwich’, ‘Turkey & Cheese Sandwich’ and ‘Deli Delight Sub’, among others.

Package sizes vary from 145 grams to 260 grams depending on the item. The recall applies to all best before dates up to and including September 17, 19 or 20, 2026, depending on the specific product. Consumers are urged to check the full list of UPC codes and best before dates against products in their fridge before consuming them.

Why Was This Recall Issued?

The products are being pulled from shelves due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness. According to Health Canada, food contaminated with the bacteria may not look, smell or taste spoiled, making it difficult for consumers to detect a problem on their own.

Symptoms of listeriosis can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. The infection poses a heightened danger to pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, an infection may cause only mild, flu-like symptoms but can still lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth. In severe cases, the illness can be fatal.

Where Were These Products Sold?

According to the recall notice, the affected sandwiches, subs and croissants were distributed in Alberta. Health Canada notes that the recall was triggered by the company itself, and as of the announcement, no illnesses had been reported in connection with consuming these products.

What Should You Do?

Consumers who purchased any of the listed products should not consume, serve, use, sell or distribute them. The recalled items should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. Anyone who believes they became sick after eating one of these products is advised to contact a healthcare provider.

Shoppers are also encouraged to check their refrigerators for the listed UPC codes and best before dates, since multiple similar-looking products across three different brand names are involved in this recall.

Regulatory Response

The CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of additional products. The agency is also verifying that the recalling firm, Fresh Bites Inc., is removing the affected sandwiches from the marketplace. The recall has been assigned identification number RA-78484 by Health Canada, with a corresponding CFIA reference number of 17571.
