If you bought broccoli sprouting seeds on Amazon this summer, check your pantry now. EAK Distribution LLC of Casper, Wyoming, announced a recall of HOME GROWN Green Sprouting Calabrese Broccoli Seeds, 8 oz, Heirloom, on October 2, 2026, because the seeds have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The company says the recall is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which posted the notice as a public service.

The agency does not endorse either the product or the company. The recall covers a single production lot sold to consumers nationwide through Amazon.com.

What Triggered the Recall

The recall began with a warning further up the supply chain. According to the company, its seed supplier notified it that the seeds had been used by a sprout grower whose finished product was part of an FDA investigation into a multistate foodborne illness outbreak.

On September 16, EAK Distribution was told there could be a problem with the original broccoli seed lot, identified as lot #W4105, which it had purchased. The supplier has recalled the affected bulk seed lot. EAK Distribution halted all sales on September 17.

On September 28, 2026, the supplier informed the company that Salmonella had been detected in a broccoli seed sample collected and analyzed by the FDA. The company says it has ceased all production and distribution of the affected product. No illnesses linked to EAK Distribution’s product have been reported to date.

Who Should Be Concerned

Anyone who purchased the seeds from Amazon between August 20 and September 18, 2026 is covered by the recall. The product was sold to consumers across the United States, and the company has not named specific states.

Sprouting seeds deserve extra attention because the warm, humid conditions used to grow sprouts can allow bacteria to multiply. The company’s notice says Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people who are infected often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, the infection can spread into the bloodstream and cause more severe illnesses, including arterial infections such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis.

What Consumers Need to Do Now

The company’s instructions are short and direct.

  • Check your pouch for the UPC 850056627443 and the lot code AUG172026 embossed on the top seal.
  • Do not use the seeds, and do not sprout them.
  • Dispose of the product.
  • Contact Amazon to request a full refund.

If you have already used these seeds and feel unwell, particularly with the symptoms described above, contact a health care provider and mention the possible exposure. Wash hands, surfaces and containers that touched the seeds or any sprouts grown from them.

Questions about the recall can be directed to EAK Distribution at 541-306-4278, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm PST.

From the Agency

The FDA published the company’s announcement on October 2, 2026, classifying it as a foodborne illness recall under its Food and Beverages category. As with all company-issued announcements on its recall page, the agency notes that it posts them as a public service and does not endorse the product or the company.

The seeds were linked to the wider investigation through a sprout grower, not through any complaint from EAK Distribution customers. That is why the company stresses that no illnesses have been tied to its own product so far. The recall is a precaution based on the supplier’s notification and the positive sample result.

Consumers who are unsure whether they own the affected lot should compare the lot code and UPC on their pouch with the details above. When in doubt, the safest course is to discard the seeds and seek a refund through Amazon.
