Shelter’s Choice, Breeder’s Edge Feline Milk Replacers Recalled: FDA

If you are hand-raising or fostering kittens, check your pantry before the next feeding. A batch of feline milk replacer sold nationwide may be dangerously low in the vitamins and minerals that young kittens depend on for survival, and the consequences of feeding it can show up within days.

Revival Animal Health of Orange City, Iowa, has voluntarily recalled several sizes of its ‘Breeder’s Edge’ and ‘Shelter’s Choice’ Feline Milk Replacers after testing found inconsistent, low levels of potassium, copper, folic acid, choline and/or pyridoxine (vitamin B6). The company says the shortfall traces back to a third-party manufacturer it has since cut ties with.

What Went Wrong?

According to Revival’s announcement, the recall was triggered after a third-party lab flagged a possible nutrient deficiency in one lot. Revival then ran its own confirmatory testing across multiple lots, and an independent animal nutritionist reviewed the results on August 12, 2026. Those findings pointed to manufacturing inconsistencies at the contracted producer, prompting the voluntary pullback.

No illnesses have been confirmed so far, but Revival says it is investigating nine complaints describing possible gastrointestinal problems and bone development issues in kittens that consumed the products.

The recalled items were sold online and in retail pet stores across the country, packaged in resealable stand-up bags and 12 oz jars. The affected products, UPCs and sizes are:

Best-by dates on the recalled bags and jars range from September 2026 through March 2028, so consumers should compare the UPC and packaging rather than relying on date alone.

Who Should Be Concerned

The danger is highest for neonatal and young kittens, whose organs are still developing and who rely entirely on milk replacer for nutrition. Revival’s announcement warns that deficiencies which might barely register in an adult cat can be rapidly fatal or cause permanent developmental damage in a kitten. Potential effects include anemia, neurological dysfunction, liver failure, kidney damage, skeletal disease and cardiac problems, and because kittens grow so fast, symptoms can appear within days to a few weeks of feeding.

What Consumers Need to Do Now

Revival is urging anyone with the recalled products to stop feeding them to kittens immediately. Owners, breeders and shelters should:

• Stop using any recalled Breeder’s Edge or Shelter’s Choice milk replacer right away.
• Contact the company to arrange a return and full refund.
• Watch kittens that have eaten the product for signs of illness, including lethargy, poor growth, weakness or digestive upset.
• Call a veterinarian promptly if any kitten that consumed the recalled formula is showing clinical signs.

Regulatory Response

Revival Animal Health stated the recall is being carried out with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company also confirmed it has ended its relationship with the outside manufacturer linked to the inconsistent nutrient levels, as it works to prevent a repeat of the issue in future production.
