Publix Recalls All GreenWise Organic Frozen Blueberries Over E. coli Risk

Publix is recalling all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries after the frozen fruit was found to potentially carry Escherichia coli O145:H28 (E. coli O145), a Shiga toxin-producing strain linked to serious illness. The recall was announced on July 29, 2026, and affects Publix stores across eight Southeastern states.

All lots of these frozen, Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) organic berry products are included in the recall, not just specific lot codes.

Why Was This Recall Issued?

The recalled berries may be contaminated with E. coli O145, a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody) and vomiting. Most healthy people recover within a week, but some infections can progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening complication that particularly endangers young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. The action follows an earlier recall issued on July 3 by Chilean supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. covering a specific lot of GreenWise Organic Blueberries. Based on further product traceback and epidemiological findings from public health officials, Publix expanded the recall to include all lots of both blueberry and mixed berry products as a precaution.

Who Is Affected?

The recalled products were shipped to Publix retail stores throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Publix operates 1,413 stores across these states. The company says it conducted an internal stop sale of the frozen GreenWise blueberry and mixed berry products by the end of June 2026, and the items remain unavailable for purchase.

What Should You Do?

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected GreenWise frozen berry products should not eat them. The products should be discarded or returned to a Publix store for a full refund.
