Kao USA Recalls Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo Over Bacteria Risk

Kao USA Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of select lots of its Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo, sold in 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz sizes, across the United States and Canada. The recall was announced after testing detected Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in certain batches of the product manufactured in late February 2026.

What Products Are Being Recalled?
The recall covers specific lots of ‘Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo’ manufactured between February 21, 2026 and February 26, 2026. The affected sizes and identifying details are as follows:
- 8.5 oz size (UPC 840035231242) with lot code YR010556
- 33.8 oz size (UPC 840035231273) with lot codes YR010566 and YR010576
The lot codes are printed in black on the bottom of each bottle and begin with the prefix ‘YR’. Kao USA noted that further investigation into the full scope of the issue is still ongoing.
Why Was This Recall Issued?
The recall was triggered by the detection of Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in the affected shampoo lots. According to Kao USA, this bacteria poses little medical risk to generally healthy individuals. However, people with weakened immune systems or other underlying health issues may be more susceptible to infection. Out of caution, the company is urging all consumers who have the affected product to stop using it regardless of their health status.

The recall applies to consumers, salons, and retail partners in the United States and Canada who purchased or received the specific lots of ‘Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo’ identified above.
