Food to Live Recalls Green Powder Products Nationwide Over Salmonella Risk

Lexunder Inc., doing business as Food To Live of Brooklyn, NY, has recalled multiple Food to Live brand green powder products sold nationwide after a retail sample tested positive for Salmonella. The affected wheatgrass, spirulina, algae, and supergrass powders were sold online through foodtolive.com, foodinbulk.com, and other marketplaces in resealable pouches and bulk cases weighing up to 55 pounds.

What Products Are Being Recalled?

The recall covers several Food to Live branded green powder products, including ‘Food to Live Wheatgrass Powder’, ‘Food to Live Organic Spirulina Powder’, ‘Food to Live Organic Algae Powder Mix’, ‘Food to Live Organic SuperGrass Powder’, and ‘Food to Live Organic Wheatgrass Powder’. Package sizes range from 2 ounces up to 55-pound bulk cases. Affected lots include SO-72558 through SO-79374, or codes VFD/ORG/MORP/B/25, C25051312, and OSP251001. The lot code and best before date are printed on the back of the package below the Nutrition Facts panel, next to the barcode. No other products or lot codes are affected.

Why Was This Recall Issued?

The products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and cause more severe illnesses such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis, and arthritis. The recall was initiated after the FDA notified the company that a sample of Food To Live brand Organic Supergreens Mix, 8-ounce package, lot SO-77820, collected at retail, tested positive for Salmonella. The source of the contamination has not yet been determined, and the company has suspended production and distribution while the investigation continues.
